חגורת הנפץ שהיתה על גופו של סיף א-דין מוסטפא, חוטף המטוס המצרי ללרנקה הבוקר (שלישי), היתה מזויפת, כך קבעו הרשויות בקפריסין לאחר סיום האירוע. על המטוס היו 81 נוסעים ואנשי צוות. בקפריסין אמרו תחילה כי האירוע הוא על רקע רומנטי ואינו אירוע טרור' זאת לאחר שהחוטף ביקש להיפגש עם גרושתו המתגוררת באי ובעקבות שחרורם של רוב נוסעי המטוס ונותרו שבעה נוסעים יחד עם החוטף.
לאחר מכן, דווח כי החוטף דורש את שחרורם של אסירים מהכלא המצרי. ברשת "אל-ערבייה" דווח שקרובי משפחתו של סיף א-דין מוסטפא, חוטף המטוס, אמרו שהוא סובל מבעיות נפשיות וכי בן משפחתו הוזמן לחקירה על ידי כוחות הביטחון.
